Genetic and Ecological Approaches to Human and Animal Health

Speakers: Kevin Esvelt (MIT Media Lab), Jacob Shwartz-Lucas (Animal Pain Research Institute) Hosted by: Harvard Undergraduate Biotechnology Club

Time & Location

Apr 11, 2025, 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM EDT

Harvard University, Sever Hall, Cambridge, MA 02138, USA (Room 102)

About the event

This event will explore how advances in genetics and ecology are being applied to support animal health in both natural and managed environments. Presentations and discussions will cover strategies for managing parasitic disease, improving resilience through selective breeding, and addressing health conditions relevant to laboratory, livestock, and wild animal populations. Emphasis will be placed on how genomic tools and ecological insight can be integrated to improve outcomes across species.

  • Mice Against Ticks: Interventions aimed at controlling tick populations and preventing disease transmission.

  • New World Screwworm Eradication: Insights into international efforts to mitigate the impact of parasitic infestations on livestock and wildlife.

  • Precision Pain Management: New approaches to precisely mitigating pain with non-addictive, targeted treatments in medical and veterinary care.

Kevin Esvelt is an associate professor at the MIT Media Lab, where he leads the Sculpting Evolution Group. His research focuses on developing tools in genetics and ecology to help address challenges in public and animal health. He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard University and has contributed to methods for improving how biological systems can be used in agriculture, conservation, and medicine. His group works with researchers and public institutions to support collaborative, practical applications of biotechnology.

Jacob Shwartz-Lucas is a molecular biologist and director of the Animal Pain Research Institute (APRI), a network of researchers focused on improving health and management outcomes in animals through improvements in breeding and therapeutic techniques. He comes from a family of Angus ranchers in Eastern New Mexico and West Texas and is committed to applying science in support of sustainable agriculture. His work involves identifying heritable traits related to resilience, welfare, and performance in animals, and he has contributed to research and development efforts in the U.S., Europe, and South Africa.
